Child in Rain

Pooled you in my pink scarf
until you looked like a rose.
No, like a bug inside a rose.
And your happy expression
looked like a warning.
All this after trying
the usuals, cossets
and cajoling, deontological
reasoning, promises,
straight talk. By that I mean—
pretending that you’re grown.
I will not have you feel ashamed
we must be bargaining
creatures. We are.
Your obstinance this morning
achieves something
akin to sailing. This layer of the rain
we rarely get in our desert
climate covers your skin
leaving its petrichor
and we stand for a moment
speechless together. You go in.
I circle the block with windows open.
Adorations all over the world
require the attention of strict devotees.
I worship what resists.

きみはピンクのスカーフにすっぽりひたって
バラのように咲いていた。
いいえ、バラにひそんだ虫かしら。
ほころんだ笑顔が
ひとつの戒めだった。
いつものように
おだて、あまやかし
義務やら責任やらをいい聞かせ
約束し、ありのままに
話そうとしたあとで。ようするにーー
大人あつかいをして。
気まずい思いはさせないわ
わたしたちはやり取りできる
生き物なのですから。そうよね。
今朝、きみはさんざんむずかって
舟のように出ていってしまった。
砂漠気候では
めったに降らないのに
雨のうす膜がきみの肌をおおって
地面にあまい香りをのこしていった
ふたりとも、ちょっとのあいだ
なにも話さずに立ったまま。さあ、入ってらっしゃい。
窓を開けたまま、わたしは家の近くをひとまわり。
崇拝者として、きびしく見まもる
そうすれば、世界をひろく崇める気持ちがわいてくる。
わたしは、まつろわないものを賛美する。

Katie Peterson lives in the Berkeley Hills, where there is lots of fog and little rain. She is the author of five books of poetry, including Life in a Field (Omnidawn, 2021) and the forthcoming Fog and Smoke (FSG, 2023). Her work has been translated into Portuguese, Spanish, French, Korean, and now, Japanese. She directs the Creative Writing Program at the University of California at Davis.
